The Grand Canal from the Accademia

pigment ink and watercolour on rag paper, 10″x17″ (image size) I love Venice. Many people who visit once, don’t. I’ve been there over 20 times, each time finding something new. Even in places as crowded with tourists as the Grand Canal at the Accademia vaporetto stop, one can always find a quiet spot to sketch.
Rooftops of Sarlat

pigment ink and watercolour on rag paper, 16″x11″ (image size) This drawing was a personal challenge. I love trying to solve perspective problems and this was a good one. I started from the smallest point in the centre of the buildings and worked out from there, constantly checking proportions and angles.
Sarlat Market

Pigment ink and watercolour on rag paper, 15″x12″ (image size) Markets are wonderful places to sketch. There is lots of colour and movement. In this drawing, I loved the contrast between the buildings surrounding the market square and the activity under the loose curves of the awnings.
Above Sarlat

SKETCHBOOK SERIES: pigment ink and watercolour on rag paper, 12″x10″ (image size) This church complex of Notre Dame de la Nativité de Temniac was the perfect place to sit and draw.
