“The Last of Autumn”

oil on canvas panel, 14″ x 18″ – Painted in the fall of 2020 on a beautiful day that represented that perfect balancing point between summer and autumn.

“Summer 1939”

Triptych – oil on wood panels, 16″ x 52″ – For many, the summer of 1939 must have seemed to be a wonderful, normal time. No one could have known the extent to which lives would be completely and irrevocably changed. My mother lost a favourite brother. This painting arises out of my rereading the […]

“Sky Full of Clouds” SOLD

oil on canvas, 48″ x 48″ – I love painting clouds. This one seemed to require a large format. The landscape began as Vancouver Island but, by the time I’d finished, there were aspects of Ireland and Newfoundland in it.

“Rising From The Stones”

oil on canvas panel, 11″ x 14″ – From a recent trip to British Columbia. The year, so far, out there has been so dry that once-full creeks and rivers are bone dry. This one – Norrish Creek – was filled with white rocks out of which were struggling spindly trees and shrubs.

“Nectarines and Glass”

oil on canvas, 20″ x 24″ – Glass and the way it reflects and holds light has always been an interest of mine

“Hydrangea” SOLD

oil on canvas, 40″ x 30″ – another in my series of experiments with a floral subject.

“Espresso Reflection”

oil on canvas, 24″ x 20″ – I have been experimenting a little more with using colour to establish the dynamics of the composition and, as one of my favourite artists, Bonnard, said, “You can’t have too much yellow”.

“Craftsman, San Trovaso” SOLD

oil on canvas, 30″ x 40″ – The San Trovaso boatyard, or ‘Squero’ in Venetian, is found by most tourists visiting the city. It is one of the last of the many repair yards that were so important to keep the Venetian water economy going.

“Blowsy Peonies”

oil on canvas, 36″ x 30″ – Although flowers aren’t a usual subject of mine, I enjoyed exploring the rich colour and forms in this small series of floral studies. The peonies were the first in this series and were a sort of an homage to a late and very dear friend, Silvia Clarke. Each […]
